BOAT HIRE
Calshot Sailing Club is fortunate enough to have a fleet of dinghies available for hire to members. The boats we currently have in our fleet are:
8 Toppers - (Click here for more information)
1 Laser - (Click here for more information)
1 Pico - (Click here for more information)
1 RS Vision - (Click here for more information)
Any member who has a basic level of competence is allowed to hire however to ensure safety we insist that they are only used when a club safety boat is on the water.
All boats are used extensively during our training programmes enabling tuition and coaching to be provided for everyone, even if they do not own a boat.
CLUB TRAINING - Available exclusively to Members Only
The club offers a comprehensive programme of training each year. The following notes introduce what is currently planned for the 2011 season. Dates can be found in the Club programme with further updates in the News and Event pages.
The more formal RYA courses - VHF Radio, First Aid, Powerboat Level 2 and Safety Boat (which result in the award of nationally recognised certificates) will be held as and when required. These courses will incurr a charge towards the costs. You will however find the charges are lower than those outside of the club. If you are interested in any of these or have any general training enquiries please use the link below in order to contact Andy Sutton and Richard Brooks:
A list of those booked for courses so far can be found here:
OOD Training Every member is asked to help with OOD duties (running the races). It is appreciated that many are newcomers and unaware of their repsonsibilities. To address this we always ensure that inexperienced members are on duty with the inexperienced. In addition We regularly run a one day introduction to this duty covering:
- General introduction to the club safety boats
- Where to find everything
- Start sequence and flags
- Timing
- Course setting
- Using the club computer to record finish times
We try and make this a fun day and you will get a chance to practice your boat handling in the RIBs.
Friday Club - aims to provide a regular training programme for our junior sailors. This year the Friday training will be focussed on the beginners and intermediate sailors - ie those who can sail but need to build their confidence as well as ability. These sessions are aimed at all and will be just as applicable for potential Ben Ainslies as well as those who wish just to sail.
Junior Training - Saturdays aims to provide training for the more experineced juniors - those wishing to learn more about racing will be coached to improve racing skill, those just wnating to get on the watrer and have a blast will get the opportunity improve their technique. We will aim to structure these sessions to the needs and wishes of the participants.
For the above sessions pre-registration is preferred - details will be provided in the newsletter and on the website nearer the time.
All planned dates are in the club programme.
Adult Training - This year adult training will focus on the needs of beginners and intermediate sailors. THe RYA Adult Participation Scheme will provide coaches/instructor to supplement the sessions given by the club instructors and coaches. As with the junior trainig we are holding a registration session wher eth ecoaches/instructors can assess the needs and wicshes of participants. The dates are int he programme and further details will be communicated nearer the time. Please mke and effort to attend - we can then ensure the training is tailored for you.
The Friday Club, Junior Training Saturdays and the Adult training days will incur a charge. These charges allow the club to use external instructors and coaches to reduce the pressure on the club coaches and instructors and to improve the club's training facilities for the benefit of everyone. Int he past fess have been used to fund instructor and coach training and to purchase a video camera and projector.
Supervised Sailing and other days with Safety Cover will be less formal - we will be guided by what the participants want to learn. We could have fun races, one-to-one coaching of sailing technique, we could play water games or just go for a sail. The aim is that everyone just gets on the water and hopefully learns something. These will be ideal sessions for novices to sail with more advanced sailors and for those with specific things they want to try to be able to do this in a safe environment with instructors on hand.
RYA Training Days are coaching days targeted specifically at juniors. On these days the RYA provide a professional coach, funded by Sport England for the benefit of youth sailors (under 24 in RYA terms). Our aim is to use these sessions to inspire the youth at Calshot (all abilities) to improve so that they can be good club sailors/racers or perhaps go further. Particpants for these sessions will be selected mainly form the Friday Club attendees and preference will be given to thoose who participate in club events. At the request of soem parents we have 3 days scheduled during the school holidays - 2 in the Whitsun 1/2 term and 1 int h eSummer holiday. We hope to schedule 1 or 2 more days depending on the need.
RYA Powerboat Level 2 The club is able to offer a formal RYA Powerboat Level 2 course to club members at a reduced price. Professional Instructors will provide tuition in boat handling, seamanship and safety over a 2 day period. Please express your interest using the training request however we anticipate that this course will cost int he region of £150 for the 2 days.
Safety Boat We run the RYA Safety Boat course when we have enough sufficiently experienced members to fill a course. Anyone wishing to take this course needs to be qualified to at least Powerboat Level 2 and show at least a years exeprience in RIB handling. If RIB handling is not second nature you will not benefit from this course.
First Aid The RYA First Aid course is a one-day course specifically tailored to the needs of those who venture out on the water. It provides basic lifesaving skills including the initial treatment of minor injuries and illnesses including hypothermia.
