We welcome sailors of all ages and abilities at Calshot. There are experienced members who are always ready to help with any aspect of sailing.
We have a fleet of club Taz, Topper, Pico and Laser dinghys that are available for all members to use. Please click here for more information.
If you are new to sailing, you should consider enrolling in an RYA 'Start Sailing' Level 1 course. This offers an introduction to sailing, covering the minimum required to get you afloat under supervision.
The next progression is the RYA 'Basic Skills' Level 2 course. This will get you past the basics and on to competence controlling your boat in light winds. This course is the ideal start for those who want to get to grips with seamanship and build their experience in boats.
Please visit the RYA web site for details of the National Sailing Scheme Level 1 and 2 courses.
We recommend you attend one of the local RYA training centres such as
Calshot Activities Centre, which is within walking distance from Calsot Sailing Club. Click here for details of their watersports courses.
Southampton Water Activities Centre - RYA Training Centre on the River Itchen.

Calshot Sailing Club runs a 'Friday Club' Coaching Programme, aimed at Junior members although Novice members are also welcome to attend. Instructors are RYA qualified.
Please refer to the Junior Events Page for dates when these training sessions take place.
Calshot Sailing Club has been awarded Volvo RYA Champion Club Status which aims to develop the very best race training programmes for their youth sailors. As part of this scheme, Calshot Sailing Club is entitled to receive RYA Coaching Days, where an RYA coach comes along to the club to offer training and advice to all those that are interested in raising their racing skill level. It is aimed mainly at Junior/Youth members but Adults are also welcome to attend. This is a great opportunity that should not be missed.
Please refer to the Sailing Programme for dates and look out for announcements in the Newsletter providing more information as it becomes available.
These sessions are new to 2007 and involve a racing start followed by sailing a triangular course. The sessions will be videoed and techniques reviewed by instructors.
We currently offer the following training courses to members:
Safety Boat Training.
We organise a number of formal safety boat training courses outside the sailing season. There are two formats; a Power Boat Level 2 course (including certificate) and a one-day 'safety boat familiarisation' course. The Power Boat Level 2 course is generally limited on numbers as it is a chargeable course, but is severely discounted. The 'safety boat familiarisation' course is free to participate and covers the key points of the Power Boat Level 2 and the safety boat course. If you would like to take part in either of these courses, please speak to the Membership secretary closer to the time.
Marine VHF Training.
We organise a number of Marine VHF license courses outside the sailing season. These courses are severely discounted and there is a one-off license fee payable on the day. Once you have your Marine VHF License, you have it for life. Calshot Sailing Club uses Marine VHF for communications during races and use of the radios requires a license.
First Aid Certificate.
We are intending organising a number of First Aid courses outside the sailing season. These courses will cover the level of First Aid recommended by the RYA.
Note: If anyone has the opportunity to undertake a First Aid course at work, please request the instructor that they also cover hypothermia as this is not normally covered but is recommended by the RYA.
If you sail an ISO dinghy, we intend organising ISO specific training. We have previously arranged ISO courses but the sea conditions have been against us on the day!
