The Volvo RYA Champion Club scheme aims to support clubs all over the UK to develop the very best race training programmes for their youth sailors, and to help guarantee Britain's future success at the Olympics and other top international regattas.
The scheme is a key part of the RYA Youth Initiative that has
received £1 million per annum support from Sport
England for four years, with the aim of identifying and nurturing young
sailing talent for future Olympic and international success.
Calshot Sailing
Club is one of only 77 clubs out of 1300 UK sailing clubs that has made the
grade.
The Volvo RYA Champion Club scheme is a gold standard for sailing
clubs, recognising those with a commitment to youth sailing and race coaching.
It aims to encourage young sailors and windsurfers at the grass roots level,
to stay in the sport and learn to compete.
Ultimately the goal is to increase Britain's medal wins in international regatta,
building on the British Sailing Team's success at the Olympic Games in Sydney.
In making this award, the RYA will be looking to ensure that the club.
Provide a structured Junior Race Training Programme in RYA recognised classes, whilst guiding their promising youngsters into the recognised youth classes.
Having mixed fleets recognised junior and youth classes of boats, equipment and qualified personnel to achieve the aims of the partnership.
The Volvo RYA Champion Club scheme is part of a broad Volvo sponsorship supporting young sailors and windsurfers in the UK, from club level sailing right up to the highest level of international competition - the annual Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship.
